A Guide to Proper Freezer Maintenance

Here’s an easy guide on how to clean your ULT freezer effectively while keeping downtime to a minimum.

General Maintenance

  • Keep door openings to a minimum to avoid air exchange which leads to ice build up
  • Brush off loose, soft snow with a hand brush
  • Remove any ice from gasket/rubber sealings
  • You can defrost the inner doors by removing them so you can wash and dry them while freezer is still running

Clean the Condenser Filter

The condenser filter traps dust and debris, which can block airflow and overwork the compressor.

  • Locate the filter (usually at the base or back).
  • Use a vacuum or gently wash the filter with water.
  • Let it dry completely before reinstalling.

👉 Schedule: Every 3 months or as recommended by the manufacturer.

Clean the Condenser Coil

The condenser coil dissipates heat from the freezer. Dust accumulation reduces efficiency.

  • Unplug the freezer for safety.
  • Use a brush or vacuum to remove dirt from the coil. Avoid bending the fins.
  • If the coil is especially dirty, consider a coil cleaner (manufacturer-approved).

👉 Schedule: Every 6–12 months, depending on the environment.

Defrosts the freezer

  • Transfer samples to a backup freezer or cooler with dry ice
  • Double check whether samples can be discarded
  • Turn off the freezer and leave the door open. Place towels to absorb water.
  • Wipe all surfaces with a soft, lint-free cloth (Consider wearing cold protection gloves)
  • Outer surface, doors, and gaskets should be cleaned with a mild detergent
  • Check whether sample placement can be optimized (but make sure to update storage documentation)

👉 Schedule: Recommended once every six months but realistically more pragmatic to do once a year

Clean the Vacuum Relief Port / Auto Vent Port

The vacuum relief port prevents the door from sticking shut after opening.

  • Inspect and clean the port after each use.
  • Use a damp cloth to remove ice or debris that may block it.

👉 Tip: A clogged port can make reopening the freezer challenging and cause wear on the door
